Following our last two exhibitions, “Europe” and “The Elections”, which featured lithographs of Daumier, great friend of Charles François Daubigny, we have opened the house to colored lithographs by Moloch this year.
Moloch is a pseudonym for Alphonse Hector Colomb (18491909), an illustrator and caricaturist known, among other things, for his political caricatures, in which he depicted various politicians and other personalities. The works you will discover in this exhibition are a series of 39 lithographs which represent scenes of Parisians who, during the 1870 siege and more specifically during the Prussian bombardments of Paris, had to seek refuge in their cellars.
This exhibition contrasts with the 2022 cultural season’s theme in Auvers-sur-Oise dealing with “Dejeuner sur l’herbe”, and shows another type of confinement to which the Parisians had to submit, about 150 years ago.
This exhibition was planned well before the tragic events striking Ukraine, so the parallel one could make with the current situation there is absolutely fortuitous and not premeditated.
This exhibition is made possible thanks to Francis Van Overbecque.
